The prospect explicitly mentioned unpredictable margins due to EUR/USD and EUR/CNY fluctuations on recurring supplier payments. They asked about "locking in rates for the next quarter." Forward contracts directly address this need by fixing exchange rates for planned payments to Chinese and Southeast Asian suppliers.

The prospect currently pays suppliers through their bank with high fees per transaction. They process approximately 20-30 international payments per month to China, Vietnam, and Thailand. Ebury's payment infrastructure would reduce per-transaction cost and offer faster settlement through local payment rails.

The prospect sells on Amazon EU marketplaces in 5 countries and is losing money on payouts due to Amazon's FX conversion. Local collection accounts in GBP, EUR, and SEK would let them receive payouts in local currency without Amazon's conversion markup.

Transcript
Sales Rep: Good morning, thanks for taking the time. I understand you're looking at optimizing your international payment setup? CFO: Yes, exactly. We're a mid-sized e-commerce company based in Munich. We import most of our goods from China and Southeast Asia -- mainly Vietnam and Thailand. Our current bank charges us quite heavily on FX conversions and the rates are honestly not competitive. Sales Rep: That's a very common pain point we hear, especially from import-heavy businesses. What kind of monthly volumes are we talking about? CFO: Roughly 400,000 euros equivalent per month in supplier payments. Most of it in US dollars and Chinese yuan. The problem is that our margins are tight, maybe 15-20%, and when the EUR/USD rate moves against us by even 2-3%, it can wipe out a significant portion of our profit on a shipment. Sales Rep: I completely understand. That's exactly the kind of scenario where our hedging tools come in. Have you looked into forward contracts before? CFO: We've heard about it but our current bank only offered us very rigid structures with high minimum amounts. We'd like something more flexible. Ideally we could lock in rates for the next quarter so we know exactly what we're paying. Sales Rep: That's one of our core strengths. We offer several types of forward contracts -- fixed, window, and flexible. The flexible forward would let you lock in a rate but draw down amounts as needed over the contract period, which fits well with variable shipment schedules. CFO: That sounds much better. We also sell on Amazon across 5 European marketplaces. We get payouts in local currencies and Amazon's conversion rates are terrible. Is there something you can do there? Sales Rep: Absolutely. We can set up local collection accounts for you in GBP, EUR, SEK, and other currencies. Amazon would pay you directly in the local currency, and you avoid their FX markup entirely. Several of our e-commerce clients have saved 1-2% on their marketplace revenues this way. CFO: That's significant for us. What would the next steps look like? Sales Rep: I'd suggest we schedule a follow-up meeting next Tuesday. I'll prepare a tailored proposal with a rate comparison against your current bank, some forward contract scenarios for your Q3 payments, and a case study on CNY hedging that's specific to your volumes. CFO: That works for me. Let's do Tuesday at 10am. I'm keen to move quickly on this.
